Just a few years ago, Alvina’s life looked very different. After the sudden passing of her mother, she and her children experienced a devastating period of homelessness, at times living in their car while trying to survive day by day. What had once been a stable family life quickly turned into a struggle to find safety, stability, and hope for the future.
Determined not to let her circumstances define her family’s future, Alvina continued searching for stability and eventually secured housing at Chadwick. While the apartment provided safety, the financial challenges of starting over remained overwhelming. Providing basic necessities such as winter coats, school supplies, and opportunities for her children to participate in normal childhood activities felt nearly impossible.
Resident Services stepped in during this critical time, offering both practical support and encouragement. Through private donations, the Ohio Capital Impact Corporation, and Camp Common Grounds, Resident Services secured winter coats for both of Alvina’s children for the 2024 and 2025 winters, backpacks for two consecutive school years, and funding for her daughter to attend summer camp for two years. These supports helped reduce financial strain and ensured her children had the resources they needed to feel confident and included at school.
Alvina also faced challenges supporting her daughter, who has autism and struggled socially in her previous school environment. In 2023, Resident Services helped Alvina research specialized educational options and assisted with enrollment paperwork, helping her daughter transition to a more supportive learning environment better suited to her needs.
In January 2024, Alvina faced another heartbreaking loss when her father passed away. Resident Services continued to stand beside her during this difficult time, providing referrals for grief counseling and coordinating with Multiple Breed Rescue so she could safely rehome her father’s dog when she was unable to care for it.
Despite the emotional and financial challenges she faced, Alvina never gave up on her dream of becoming a registered nurse. With encouragement and guidance from Resident Services, she enrolled in the Registered Nursing program at Lorain County Community College and began classes in January 2025. When grant funding did not cover the required lab supplies, Resident Services helped Alvina secure a Wallick scholarship, removing a critical financial barrier and allowing her to continue her education.
Today, Alvina’s life has been transformed. She and her children have maintained stable housing, her daughter now has access to a more supportive educational environment, and Alvina is actively pursuing her nursing degree—working toward a career that will allow her to provide long-term financial stability for her family while serving others in her community.
Through targeted interventions and compassionate support, Resident Services helped Alvina move from homelessness to stability, from crisis to opportunity. In measurable ways, this support provided housing stability for a previously homeless family, delivered essential resources for two children over multiple years, supported access to specialized education, and helped a determined mother pursue higher education and a career in healthcare.
Alvina’s story is a powerful reminder that when families are given the right support at the right time, they can overcome extraordinary barriers and build brighter futures for themselves and their children.
